The Mistress of the Storm
21st April 2010
David Fickling Books is thrilled to have acquired two extraordinary and magical novels for ten-year-olds and upwards by exciting new author, M L Welsh!

Bella Pearson, editorial director at David Fickling Books, comments: We are so thrilled to welcome such an enormously talented writer to the DFB list. Melanie Welsh has written a first novel that will have children (and adults) reading under their bedclothes with torches - intrigue lurks round every corner, as well as a cast of wonderfully warm characters and the most menacing grandmother in childrens literature. I couldnt put this book down - in the tradition of Cornelia Funke and Diana Wynne Jones, it has at its heart a truly inventive and magical story.

Verity Gallant lives in the harbour town of Wellow and tries to fit into life as best she can. But her life starts to unravel when a mysterious stranger hands her a red-bound book, and it is only with the help of her two best friends that she is able to combat the forces of magic which threaten to engulf the town and her family too.

David Fickling Books has acquired TRASH by Andy Mulligan
5th November 2009

Oxygen levels on the planet will rise when this book gets published. So many people will be holding their breath to see what happens! It is a fantastic nail-biter. Young adult readers will love it, and in my opinion so will everybody else over the age of 12. It is an all read. The clincher for me is that it is also touching, in places deeply touching, and beautifully written. It says things that need to be said in a way that will be heard. And nobodys going to put it down. This is just one of those stories that the whole world will want to read. David Fickling
